SEGMENTS

Pat Bryant / Steve Curwood

Bryant is a civil and tenant rights activist who moved into the environmental arena. Driving with Bryant along the industrial corridor, Steve visits the community of Colona. Residents of this neighborhood complain that air emissions from local chemical plants threaten their health. ()

Industry and Government

Steve talks with Richard Kleiner of the Louisiana Chemical Association and Paul Templet, Louisiana's Secretary for Environmental Quality, about the state's industrial plants. Though the state has reduced pollution significantly over the past few years, the EPA still ranks it second to Texas as the most polluted state in the nation. ()

Wallace, Louisiana

Formosa Plastics, a Taiwanese industrial giant, is trying to put a pulp rayon plant in this mostly-black community. Steve visits with a plant official, and with some residents who allege that the company's decision to site the plant in their town was motivated by racism. ()
