Smart Power to the People

The city of Boulder, Colorado is rolling out its new smart grid, which will enable consumers to adjust how and when they use their electricity as well as know the source of their power.

Also In This Week’s Radio Show (October 30, 2009):

The full show

Molten Metals to Green the Grid – MIT professor Don Sadoway thinks massive batteries made from liquid metals might let us use more renewable energy. If his revolutionary batteries could store the energy produced by wind and solar power, we could then use that electricity at times when the wind or sun aren’t around. It’s one of the long shot research projects the Department of Energy is putting millions behind in a new program designed to foster “transformational” energy technology.

Framing the Anything But Climate Debate – Proponents of the climate bill talk about energy security and job creation but they walk around the central issue: climate change.

From Brownfields to Solar Plains – The country’s industrial wastelands could become the new landscape of sustainability.

Perfect Storm for Fish Kill – In September, toxic golden algae killed most aquatic life in the 38 mile Dunkard Creek which runs along the West Virgina-Pennsylvania border. Some say the fish kill was made possible by mining company pollutants at levels that violated the Clean Water Act but given a pass by state regulators. Now there are fears the invasive golden algae will spread to other watersheds in the North Atlantic region.

New TV Rules in the Golden State – The California Energy Commission is set to create new energy standards for flat screen televisions.

Dining with Birds – Hugh Wiberg, the author of “Hand-feeding Backyard Birds” recently died on October 2nd. In tribute to Mr. Wiberg Living on Earth re-airs a 2000 story about feeding wild birds from the palm of your hand.

Still Life – Commentator Verlyn Klinkenborg notes the passage of time, as measured in the change of seasons.
